Facilities

The settlement nearby of Colac Bay boasts two pubs, both of which
serve meals including a take-away and small dairy with about 50
permanent residents while Riverton, a quaint fishing village just 9km
away has a number of restaurant/cafes, public swimming pool, golf
course, 7 day supermarket, hardware store, 24 hour fuel supplies and
much more.

The Beach

Tihaka Sands is located towards the western end of a beach that extends
about 5km from Colac Bay towards Riverton. Colac Bay at the western
end is renowned as a safe swimming beach for children with small waves,
while at the eastern end the surf can be wild. Tihaka Sands is located at
"Trees" one of Southlands premier surf breaks
, about 1.5km from the
Colac Bay end offering both safe swimming and great surfing.

Dolphins are regular visitors with Orca also being seen from time to time
following the shoreline.

Surfing

Tihaka Sands is right on Southland's no.1 surf beach "trees", being the
base for the annual peak to surf combined snowboarding/surfing contest.

The Southern coast around to the Catlins (famous for the biggest surf in
New Zealand) has many unpopulated surf breaks with good ride-able
waves more often than not.

Fishing

The Colac Bay boat ramp provides access to arguably the best Blue cod fishing in New Zealand just a 5 minute boat ride away, with the world famous Foveaux Strait oyster beds just a half hours boat ride away. Paua, mussels and crayfish are plentiful along the southern coast as well as flounder and whitebait.
